Prevalence of Mid-Mesial Canal and Isthmuses in Mandibular First and Second Molars in an Iranian Population
Authors
Abstract:
Background and Aim: It is essential to know the internal root canal anatomy to reach a successful root canal debridement and a subsequent successful root canal obturation. Due to the importance of knowing the complexity of mid-mesial (MM) canals and isthmuses and how to deal with these anatomic variations, in this study, we examined the incidence and prevalence of the MM canal and isthmuses in mandibular first and second molars. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) records of patients presenting for diagnostic purposes to a radiology center in the city of Sari were used. A total of 207 mandibular first molars (81 males and 126 females) and 235 mandibular second molars (94 males and 140 females) were examined. Data were entered into SPSS 16 software. Descriptive data were presented using frequency percentage with the significance level of less than 0.05. Results: Among the mandibular first molars that were examined in the study population, the prevalence of the MM canal was reported to be 2.5% in males and 4% in females. Similarly, the prevalence of the MM canal in the mandibular second molars was reported to be 2.1% in males and 3.6% in females. Also, the prevalence of isthmuses was 81.2% (males) and 78.9% (females) in the first molars and 78.7% (males) and 70.7% (females) in the second molars. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, it is important for dentists to be familiar with the root canal anatomy and to consider the referral of complex cases to endodontists.

Morphology and Prevalence of C-shaped Canal in Mandibular Second Molars in a Population in North of Iran
Background and purpose: In order to achieve a successful root canal treatment, knowledge on root canal morphology and anatomy is essential. This study investigated the prevalence and morphology of the C- shaped canal in the mandibular second molar. Materials and methods: In this cross sectional study, we used cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of 260 patients obtained from a radiology...
full textIncidence, location, and type of isthmus in mandibular second molars among individuals of an Iranian population
BACKGROUND AND AIM: Isthmuses are narrow and strip shaped connections between two canals containing pulpal tissue that may encompass bacteria as well. They are hardly accessible for cleaning; therefore, success and failure of root canal treatments could be affected by their presence. The present study was carried out aiming to evaluate the incidence, location, and type of isthmus in mandibular ...

A total of 139 extracted mandibular second molars were injected with India ink and demineralized. They were made clear and transparent with methyl salicylate, and the anatomy of their canals was studied. It was found that 86.3% of mandibular second molars had two roots, 9.3% had one root, and 4.3% had three roots. Ninety percent of the mesial roots of the mandibular second molars with two roots...
full textEndodontic management of mandibular first molars with mid mesial canal: A case series
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the importance of knowledge of the internal anatomy of root canals for the success of endodontic treatment. Lack of knowledge of anatomic variations and their characteristics in different teeth has been pointed out as one of the main cause of endodontic therapy failure. Dental operating microscope plays a key role in the identification of canal and su...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS The knowledge of variations in root canal morphology is critical for a successful endodontic treatment. The purpose of this study was to investigate variations in the root canal system of human mandibular first permanent molars in an Iranian population. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this study, 209 mandibular first molar teeth were decalcified, dye-injected, and cleared in orde...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS It is critical to have a proper knowledge of the normal anatomy of the pulp and its variations for the success of endodontic treatment. The aim of this study was to determine the canal configuration and the prevalence of C-shaped canals in mandibular first and second premolars in a North-Western Iranian population. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 163 extracted mandibular ...
